Every conductor has their wish list – that one challenging orchestral work that pushes all boundaries even further. A full-length symphony by Gustav Mahler is part of that list. Chief conductor Duncan Ward and Philzuid are preparing for an admirable symphonic journey with Mahler’s Sixth Symphony. For this so-called “Tragic” Symphony, both the orchestra and conductor must delve deep into the human psyche. While composing his Sixth Symphony, Mahler drew inspiration from the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche. The groundbreaking philosopher advocated for an unconditional belief in life, where one must face all problems with courage and perseverance. In his four-part symphony, Mahler once again challenges the limits of the symphonic tradition.

The overall tone of this eighty-minute symphony is dark and ominous, as though Mahler foresaw his own future fate while composing the Sixth. Within a year of the premiere in 1906, his daughter passed away, and he was diagnosed with a heart condition. However, a renewed faith in life is also part of this breathtaking symphonic panorama. Throughout the symphony, Mahler offers a musical tribute to his beloved Alma. The so-called Alma theme can already be heard in the opening movement and reappears in various forms throughout the symphony. The Sixth Symphony is an intense work, with the Andante at its brilliant center, considered one of Mahler’s most comforting symphonic movements.
