Once the orchestra starts those plaintive ascending melodic lines and the singers join in with their piercing dissonances your heart leaps and you recognize Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. The ancient Franciscan text tells of the sorrow of Mary the mother at the foot of the cross. This adds extra significance to the concert during All Souls’ Day.
Pergolesi composed his heavenly masterpiece in 1736 shortly before he died at the age of twenty-six. His ‘swan song’ has since become one of the most beloved classical works ever. Before the intermission maestro Luigi Piovani will perform on his magnificent Italian master cello – built in Cremona in 1692 – the Third Cello Concerto by the most famous of Bach’s sons. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s virtuosic music is full of fantasy and baroque brilliance.
