Sharp thinker Rasit Elibol (1984, Turkey, Wormerveer) is a writer and journalist. He writes penetrating stories about social issues such as migration, labor, and social inequality for De Groene Amsterdammer. In 2025, his book Vuistslagen (Fist Fights) was published, in which he connects his own history with these themes. Does it matter where you were born, he wonders this evening. The answer is yes. “That cradle determines not only your outlook, but also your way out.” Elibol’s words are reinforced by Het Muziek, an ensemble for new music with an open mind, which plays high-profile programs in the most surprising locations.

Does geography determine your fate? Yes, in Elibol’s experience. He is now a celebrated writer and acknowledges the lasting scars left by a childhood in poverty. In his award-winning book, he refers to the struggle that people with a migrant background have to endure to gain a place in Dutch society. “It’s as if we have to climb Mount Everest every day.” He dedicated the book to his parents. In line with the writer’s approach, music is also something that is not determined by the performers, but invites exploration. The Music plays work by composers with non-Dutch roots.
