With a thunderous applause and no less than three awards in hand, Yuan Xia left the stage after his spectacular performance in the final of TROMP Percussion 2024. The jury’s comments were equally impressive: “… your performances are rich in sound, depth, and sincerity. You exhibit elegant virtuosity. As a musician, you are sensitive, indescribable, and moving. Technically and musically, you stand completely above the music.” This afternoon, Yuan Xia will perform Box Office one more time, the compulsory work composed for TROMP. “With the controlled performance of a martial artist, Xia moved through the percussion instruments made of banana boxes,” said NRC.
Yuan Xia (China, 2001) began studying percussion in Shanghai and now lives and studies in Stuttgart. He won the second prize at the IPEA International Percussion Competition in 2021 and the first prize at the Jeju International Brass and Percussion Competition in 2022. At TROMP Percussion 2024, held here at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, Yuan Xia went home with the first prize, the audience award, and the prize for the best interpretation of a Dutch work. Just like during the dazzling finale in 2024, Xia will be accompanied this afternoon by Avenue Azure, consisting of Pete Harden (guitar/electronics) and Saskia Lankhoorn (piano).
