Does the ultimate chamber music work exist? Is there one piece that you could truly call the most beautiful? A difficult question, of course, but if it must be answered, one would say: Schubert’s String Quintet. Enormous depth, lyricism, drama, and perhaps the slow movement even describes the harmony of the spheres, or the planets, or… Schubert surpassed himself once more in this work written just months before his death. He added a second cello to the traditional string quartet formation, creating a truly unique sound. With the Czech Zemlinsky Quartet and master cellist Pieter Wispelwey (the first cellist ever to receive the Dutch Music Prize in 1992), this performance will undoubtedly be beautiful and profound.

With his 11th String Quartet, which he himself called “serioso,” Beethoven wrote a compact and dramatic work, much in a short time. The mood is somber, although Beethoven dedicated it to a cellist “as a cherished memento of our long friendship.” Janáček’s First String Quartet tells the story of Tolstoy’s novella The Kreutzer Sonata through music, exploring intense jealousy. The Zemlinsky Quartet has an impressive track record, having won prizes at the Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Prague Spring International Music Competition, and the London International String Quartet Competition, where it also won the Audience Prize. The pinnacle of their achievements was the First Grand Prize at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition in 2010.
