Not only in Bucharest, during the George Enescu Competition, was this Luxembourgish cellist successful. He was previously a winner of the Pablo Casals Award in Spain and the Gabrieli Competition in Berlin (second prize). Let’s not forget that in 2022, he won both the first prize, the audience award, and the prize for best interpretation of a required work at the Cello Biennale in Amsterdam. So young, and already so successful. Two beautiful Russian cello sonatas adorn his program.
It was the year 1901: Rachmaninoff’s resurrection. After a disastrous premiere of his First Symphony, he fell into a depression. Lethargy, apathy, he did not write a single note for three years. Hypnosis offered a solution; or was it the charming daughter of his therapist? However it may be, the famous Second Piano Concerto was composed during this time, along with the cello sonata, also in that delightful, captivating, late-Romantic idiom. Prokofiev wrote his cello sonata nearly half a century later, in 1949. He had heard the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich play and decided: such a great man, I want to create something for him too.
