The walk that Mahler and Freud took in Leiden during the summer of 1910 lasted four hours. What impact might such an insight into his psyche have had on Mahler’s creativity? Although Mahler felt relieved after his conversation with Freud, it remained a one-time encounter. Philosopher and psychiatrist Damiaan Denys examines this intriguing meeting. The program will also feature Mahler’s music, including his indescribably tender and loving Adagietto.
Damiaan Denys uses his imagination to continue the dialogue between the composer and the renowned psychiatrist. Mahler was a troubled individual: as a child, he witnessed the deaths of siblings, and his marriage was not without crises. Sorrow and joy, exaltation and banality blend poignantly in his music. In Vienna, Mahler experienced the sudden emergence of the prodigy Erich Wolfgang Korngold. “The new Mozart!” he exclaimed in amazement. A sensation as a child, Korngold conquered the world at 20 with his opera Die tote Stadt and became a groundbreaking film composer in Hollywood. Though he fell somewhat into obscurity after his death, his music is increasingly appearing on concert programs in recent years. Hear how he sings the Viennese fin de siècle, much like his contemporary Mahler.
