He left fourteen pianos behind in Cuba when he emigrated to Spain. At forty-five, finally freed from Castro’s travel restrictions, his star soared in Europe and the United States. The first time he performed in Amsterdam was a sensation: Jorge Luis Prats playing the complete Ibéria by Albéniz, as part of the Meesterpianisten series in 2016. The only other pianist to have performed the complete work was the legendary Alicia de Larrocha in the 1980s, a long time ago. Typically, only individual sections are performed. In an interview, Prats once said, ‘This is the most difficult music ever written for piano. Technically alone, it’s a challenge—each individual piece requires a year of study. But it’s the musical aspect that is the real challenge.’
