What do passionate climate scientist Joyeeta Gupta and violinist Lonneke van Straalen have in common? A fresh perspective, shaking things up, and creating new forms. Joyeeta Gupta, originally from India, is a professor at the University of Amsterdam and IHE-Delft Institute for Water Education, and the winner of the prestigious Spinoza Prize (the ‘Dutch Nobel’). Justice is her great driving force. After witnessing the Union Carbide chemical disaster in Bhopal as a young woman in India and seeing the impact of large multinationals on developing countries, she devoted herself to environmental and development issues.
Violinist Lonneke van Straalen stormed through the fragile world of classical music with her ensemble Pynarello. Now, with her group TheDutchBrewhouse, she forges unexpected connections with artists, scientists, and musicians. These two sharp-minded mavericks—or innovative thinkers—will focus on the challenges of climate change this evening. Using Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons—brilliant violin concertos that have been a hit for over 300 years—Gupta will outline the history of the relationship between humans and nature. But how would those four seasons sound today? Lonneke van Straalen posed this question to two young composers, who were inspired by Gupta’s ideas. How can we avoid falling into doom scenarios and instead think in terms of new possibilities and hope?
Note: This performance will be in English.
