Angry. Phlegmatic. Melancholic. And Warm-blooded. These are not just the four temperaments but also the four movements of the second symphony by Danish composer Carl Nielsen. In this monumental work from the early twentieth century, he takes us through four completely different moods: from a wild first movement, through a calm and almost cold second, and a gloomy third, to the warm-blooded final movement. The Philips Symphony Orchestra kicks off 2025 early with an extra winter concert, led by its new chief conductor Txemi Etxebarria. At the heart of this concert is Nielsen’s second symphony. But even before intermission, there’s plenty to enjoy with works by composer Malcolm Arnold. He wrote the cheerful suite for the film The Inn of the Sixth Happiness as well as the lively Four Scottish Dances. Arnold’s music is complemented by the stunningly serene The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams, featuring the young violinist Maayke Vyvey as the soloist.
