Are we separate from nature, or are we connected to it? Great artists ask profound questions, even in music. Composer and conductor Gregor Mayrhofer wondered how he could repurpose discarded items. His Recycling Concerto became a breathtaking performance for ‘all sorts of things that would otherwise end up as waste’ and orchestra.
Vivi Vassileva (winner of the Leonard Bernstein Award 2023) is one of the most talented percussionists of our time. “Vassileva immerses herself in the rhythm; her gestures, facial expressions, and entire body become pure energy,” wrote the Kölnische Rundschau. She skillfully handles the colorful percussion setup of discarded pots and pans, glasses and plastic bottles, drink cans, lampshades, and saw blades.
In this nature-themed program, Mayrhofer, completely untouched, conducts a flowing Moldau by Smetana and Mendelssohn’s passion for nature comes to life in his stormy Hebrides Overture.
