Pieter van Loenen, Dana Zemtsov, Laura van der Heijden, and Alexander Ullman: how many young top talents can fit into one ensemble? Four musicians, each with their own remarkable solo careers, now come together in chamber music. They perform Chausson and Mozart’s Piano Quartet in E-flat, KV 493—a piece that is almost too grand for chamber music. The work was Mozart’s bold response to a complaint from his publisher: “Write more popular music, or I won’t be able to print any more of your work or pay you.” Mozart wrote exactly as he wanted, setting a high standard. His publisher was quite wrong, as Mozart’s two piano quartets soon proved to be very successful. Unfortunately, Chausson, his contemporary, could not enjoy his success for long. His piano quartet was very well received at its premiere, but before the piece could make its mark on the music world, he tragically died in a bicycle accident.
