Vienna, 1900. A great wish was alive: we would very much like an orchestra of our own for our city! And so, on 30 October of that same year, the brand-new Wiener Concertverein, later called the Wiener Symphoniker, gave its first concert in the historic Great Hall of the Musikverein. A legendary ensemble; the ‘Wiener’ is one of the finest orchestras in the world. And now visiting Eindhoven for the second time, after achieving overwhelming success here in April 2024. With Mao Fujita we welcome a young pianist who excels in Mozart: in 2015 he won the Zhuhai International Mozart Competition for Young Musicians.

In 1838 Robert Schumann was astonished when, among a huge pile of music at Schubert’s brother’s house, he discovered the manuscript of several symphonies. One in particular made him very enthusiastic. What a gigantic work it was, ‘a novel in four thick volumes’, about which Schumann wrote a review praising the work’s ‘heavenly length’ at great length. Shortly afterwards Felix Mendelssohn conducted the premiere in Leipzig. A horn of plenty: Schubert’s Ninth. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, by contrast, is anything but abundant. It is in the very best hands with Mao Fujita, who as a 19-year-old student had already won first prize at the Concours International de Piano Clara Haskil.
