Lucas & Arthur Jussen together form one of the most famous piano duos in the world. Their debut CD achieved platinum status—they are a phenomenon. They won gold with their recording of two Mozart double concertos, performed with the much-loved Academy of St Martin in the Fields, with whom they will also be playing a Mozart concerto tonight. After the intermission, the brothers will perform Bach. “The two Dutchmen are wonderful storytellers with sound; their sense of light and shadow captivates their audience” (Der Tagesspiegel).
One evening, Prokofiev played his new piano pieces for friends. Among those present was the poet Balmont, who immediately wrote a sonnet about the music, including the line: “In every fleeting vision, I see worlds filled with the whimsical play of rainbows.” Prokofiev then named his pieces Visions fugitives.
Haydn played a joke with his 45th Symphony. His patron, Prince Esterházy, had kept his subjects at his summer residence longer than promised, and they longed to return home. In response, Haydn composed this symphony, in which, during the final movement, the musicians stopped playing one by one, blew out their candles, and left. Only Haydn and the concertmaster remained. The prince understood the message, and the musicians were allowed to return to court the next day.
