“Imagine you go to a restaurant, you know the chef, but there’s no menu,” said András Schiff. With a nearly shy voice and a charming Hungarian accent, he addressed his audience in London. After the COVID-19 lockdowns, the seventy-one-year-old pianist decided it was time for a new approach. How could he know a year and a half in advance what he wanted to play on that one evening? Since then, he has allowed himself to be inspired by the moment. What you hear will therefore be a surprise.
Just like last season, the Hungarian maestro will introduce the pieces himself. And what an unforgettable experience that was! “His playing is crystal clear,” wrote a critic from The New York Times. “Listening to Schiff is like looking into a clear-flowing stream and seeing all the colored stones on the bottom.” There’s a good chance those stones will tonight be colored by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Bartók, as these are his favorite composers and the ones with which he gained his fame. Whatever it turns out to be, “Trust me, just as you would trust that chef,” Schiff concluded his opening remarks in London. “I have selected the very best music.”
