Connie Palmen has a thing for the number seven. Her debut novel De wetten had seven chapters, and now, especially for Scherpdenkers, she weaves a text around seven characters within the theme of ‘metamorphoses.’ The friend becomes a traitor, the angel becomes a devil, the woman becomes a poet, the fan becomes a murderer, love turns to hate, admiration into humiliation. Amsterdam Sinfonietta plays Richard Strauss’ poignant Metamorphosen arranged for seven string players.

She is one of the most well-known writers in the Netherlands, Connie Palmen. De vriendschap, IM, Jij zegt het, and most recently Voornamelijk vrouwen—all titles that have resonated with many readers and sold very well. She is one of the most original thinkers in our language area, a blend of psychologist and philosopher. Her work consistently centers around issues of authenticity and inauthenticity, fiction and reality, identity, and the meaning ascribed by others. Richard Strauss composed Metamorphosen in the memorable year of 1945, during the last months of World War II. The 81-year-old Strauss reflects on the tragic destructions occurring in Europe, concluding the work with the words “In memoriam.” Originally written for 23 solo string players, the piece retains its impact even in a smaller arrangement.
