The Eindhoven Symphony Orchestra opens this season with a musical journey through the origins of American jazz. From classical music at the end of the 19th century to the swing orchestras of the 1930s and 1940s, you will hear how African influences and spirituals came together in symphonic jazz. Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 6 (1880) sounds warm and vibrant. Inspired by Brahms and Bohemian folk music, the symphony offers a light, sunny atmosphere with energetic Slavonic dance rhythms. Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide (1956) is a sparkling, theatrical concert piece, known for its satirical humor, brisk tempo, and brilliant orchestration. It follows a classical sonata form with Rossini-like crescendos. In George Gershwin’s An American in Paris (1928), you hear the bustling Paris of the 1920s, with jazzy sounds and even authentic Parisian taxi horns. The orchestra concludes with Duke Ellington’s It Don’t Mean a Thing (1931): a clear message that music only truly works if it swings. An evening full of swing and surprises!

For the Love of Music

Community life is an important social and cultural driving force in our society. Few things bring people together in the same way. Associations are without a doubt one of the most effective means against division in society. Both associations and individual enthusiasts or independent practitioners of amateur art are welcome at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. With the project For the Love of Music, we are happy to open our halls to everyone who loves music: creators, artists, and musicians from Eindhoven and the surrounding region.
