Film music is timeless. Or rather, cinematic music is timeless. And even better: music that captures the imagination is timeless. That’s what the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Milton, presents. Film music has become a distinct genre over the past hundred years. Two composers stand out: the American John Williams (born 1932) and the German Hans Zimmer (born 1957). Their immortal music plays a starring role this evening. You’ll hear the award-winning music of Jurassic Park, The Da Vinci Code, Gladiator, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, and E.T.

We can say with certainty that without music, half the experience of a film is lost. Film music supports the action on the silver screen. It underscores the tension, the romance, the enthusiasm, and the sadness; it lodges in your mind, and if it’s truly good, it takes on a life of its own. Take the music from the Harry Potter films: you only need to hear the first five notes and you know it: the magical atmosphere of Hogwarts. You only need to hear the opening of the theme from Jurassic Park and you sense danger. But also, a few bars later: everything will be alright!
