Carnaval des Animaux is a strange exception in Saint-Saëns’ body of work, a composer known for his consistent and conservative style, not exactly the life of the party. First, there’s the colorful zoo, captured in a refined way through notes. What lies behind it all is revealed by Maestro Jules: satire and double meanings. Animals, after all, are just like people. Alongside kangaroos, a roaring lion, turtles, and an entire chicken coop, we hear ‘Pianists,’ ‘Characters with long ears,’ and ‘Fossils.’ Are there scores to settle here, with composers, politicians, or critics being ridiculed? And what are wine glasses doing in an aquarium, anyway?
Before the intermission, there will be an explanation with visuals and musical examples. After the break, the whole piece!
