Hertog Jan Zaal
-Slowly, the strings pluck an hesitant pizzicato, colored by soft whispers of clarinet, and then, rising above it all, that infinitely tender violin melody. It gives you goosebumps. The adagio from Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful sections in the violin repertoire. Is it nostalgia? It was one of the last works the Russian composer wrote in America. In this concert, it will be performed by Alexandra Conunova.
Her recording of Prokofiev’s Sonatas was highly praised by Gramophone, which described it as “liquid ease, virtuosity, and subtle spontaneity.” Chief conductor Duncan Ward will also conduct a tribute to ancient Renaissance music by Sweelinck and the symphonic richness of Respighi. This Italian master composer painted with unparalleled skill the sparkling fountains, Nero’s Circus Maximus, and sun-drenched harvest festivals of ancient Rome.
