With his First Symphony, a long-held dream came true for Brahms. He long hesitated over his first symphonic work. Could he follow in the footsteps of the great predecessor Beethoven? It wasn’t until he was 43 that Brahms completed his debut symphony. Following in Beethoven’s footsteps, Brahms builds an impressive four-movement symphony. One moment, it is monumental in its execution, as in the breathtaking opening movement. Then, it is filled with lyrical ecstasy and rhythmic drive. In the finale, you even hear a heartfelt wink to Maestro Beethoven, with a subtle variation on Ode an die Freude from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. At fifty minutes long, Brahms’ First Symphony is a true feat for both orchestra and listener. It’s certainly a beautiful dream project for the French guest conductor Samy Rachid. As a former cellist with the Arod Quartet, Rachid has now fully dedicated himself to conducting and is considered one of the most promising conductors. He has gained significant experience as the assistant to top conductor Andris Nelsons of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Additionally, the celebrated French pianist Lise de la Salle brings an ode to Brahms’ great hero Beethoven. De la Salle performs in all the major concert halls around the world. “During her concert, the audience almost forgot to breathe,” praised The Washington Post for her pianistic artistry. She will be soloist with Philzuid in the universally loved Fourth Piano Concerto by the Viennese master. Beethoven delves even deeper into his own psyche in this contemplative piano concerto. Just like in his later symphonies and string quartets, Beethoven trades virtuosic brilliance for a more reflective style. The monumental opening movement alone is of breathtaking depth. As a surprise, Philzuid will present a new work by the Afro-American, Grammy-nominated composer and activist Carlos Simon.
