One of the most beloved works in music: Carmina Burana. Full of rich melodies and infectious rhythms. Ralph van Raat will perform a selection from a virtuosic solo piano version of the piece, based on medieval poems about love, lust, happiness, and misfortune. But what is the meaning of the texts, written in Latin, Middle High German, and Old French? And what do they reveal about the culture and mentality of the medieval people? Cultural historian Herman Pleij will provide insights. Pleij, who specializes in medieval literature, has recent titles including ‘Oefeningen in genot: Liefde en lust in de late Middeleeuwen’ and ‘Met een scheef oog: Tijdsbeelden aan de hand van mijzelf’. In an engaging and humorous manner, he will explain the connection between the original texts and the music of ‘Carmina Burana’. He will also demonstrate how these texts remain relevant to our times, as we, like the medieval people, dream of a perfect life.
