Montreal-born pianist and composer Jean-Michel Blais has never been one to let musical rules hold him back. At seventeen, he enrolled at the conservatory, but soon felt restricted by its strict classical training and decided to leave. Years later, he returned to the piano, leading to the release of his debut album ‘II’ in 2016. Since then, his music has been streamed hundreds of millions of times, and he has developed a distinctive style blending neoclassical music, minimalism and avant-garde. On his fourth album, ‘mirador’, Blais explores new musical directions. Inspired by his childhood, travels through South America and a stay at the Arvo Pärt Centre in Estonia, he combines choral singing and string instruments with traditional Andean music. Tonight, he brings this music to life in a solo performance in the intimate setting of the Small Hall.
