Pianist Boris Giltburg previously made a strong impression in Eindhoven with his performances of Beethoven and Shostakovich sonatas. Now, alongside the Pavel Haas Quartet, he will showcase his skill with works by Brahms and Dvořák. The four Czech members of the Pavel Haas Quartet won the prestigious Recording of the Year at the Gramophone Awards for their recording of Dvořák’s string quartets, so their performance of the Cypresses is sure to be exceptional. Amidst Dvořák’s music, Brahms also features prominently. As a great advocate of Dvořák, Brahms’ First Piano Quintet shows him as a young man brimming with passion and exuberance, exploring a wide range of emotions. It culminates in a brilliant finale. Brahms, who loved Hungarian gypsy music and enjoyed sitting in a café listening to such music, incorporated these influences into the finale, creating a powerful and sparkling piece — so exuberant that Arnold Schoenberg later effortlessly orchestrated it for symphony orchestra.
