Not only in Bucharest, during the George Enescu Competition, did this Luxembourg cellist achieve success. He had already been a prizewinner of the Pablo Casals Award in Spain and earned second prize at the Gabrieli Competition in Berlin. Let’s not forget that in 2022, he won the first prize, the audience prize, and the prize for best interpretation of a compulsory work at the Cello Biennale in Amsterdam. So young, and already so accomplished.
The year was 1901: Rachmaninov’s revival. After the disastrous premiere of his First Symphony, he fell into a deep depression. Lethargy, apathy—he didn’t write a single note for three years. Hypnosis proved to be the solution—or perhaps it was the charming daughter of his therapist? Whatever the case, this period gave birth to his famous Second Piano Concerto and the cello sonata, both in that wonderful, sweeping, late-Romantic idiom. Beethoven was much further along in his career when he composed his 4th Cello Sonata. A work of remarkable originality and individuality that marked the beginning of his ‘late period.’
Marco Sanna replaces Zhora Sargsyan
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Zhora Sargsyan is unable to travel to the Netherlands. Consequently, Marco Sanna will accompany Benjamin Kruithof on stage, leading to a slight modification in the program. Ticket holders have been informed of this change via e-mail.
