A “giant of the piano” and a carrier of “absolute musicality” – Grigory Sokolov has enjoyed a nearly mythical status for over fifty years. What makes him a true magician behind the keys is, above all, his **vision**. His interpretations are profound and captivating; he articulates the ‘stories’ of composers with uncompromising precision. Every decision regarding touch or tempo is meticulously prepared, ensuring that details never overshadow the work, but rather give it shape.
This result is rooted in a unique process. Sokolov is famous for his hours of rehearsals, during which he studies the personality of each specific instrument. Only when he knows the piano inside and out does the first note sound. This allows him to transform the instrument—for example, making it sound like a harpsichord when performing the music of Rameau or Purcell.
In this program, he brings together two composers central to his repertoire: Beethoven and Schubert. The focus lies on their late works, the culmination of their artistic journeys. Schubert’s Sonata in B-flat major (D. 960), written shortly before his death, combines ultimate lyricism with the sublime. Beethoven’s quirky Bagatelles (Op. 126) surprise the ear with their stylistic freedom, pointing far ahead toward the future of classical music. We are about to witness how these ‘stories’ come to life through the hands of Sokolov.
