We don’t hear her as often nowadays; her performances have become relatively rare. So when Maria João Pires, the petite and delicate Portuguese pianist with her elegant tone, takes the stage, it is an occasion to savor. As the Penguin Guide once wrote about her complete set of Mozart’s piano sonatas (she will be playing one tonight): “Maria João Pires is a stylist and a superb interpreter of Mozart. She is always refined, but never lacks classical sensibility, and she possesses a vital imagination. She strikes an ideal balance between poise and expressive sensitivity, conveying a sense of spontaneity in everything she does.”

This evening, she shares the stage with one of her favorite duo partners: Ignasi Cambra. Cambra is one of the most prominent Spanish pianists, described by conductor Valery Gergiev as someone who “speaks through his piano playing.” Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Ravinia Festival, and the Mariinsky Theatre are just a few of the prestigious venues where he has performed.
