The Fontys Saxophone Ensemble is one of the oldest saxophone orchestras in the Netherlands, with a rich history dating back several decades. Under the direction of the renowned Ties Mellema, the ensemble now features talented students showcasing their technical skill and musicality. Their repertoire ranges from classical masterpieces to contemporary and jazz-inspired pieces, reflecting the versatility of the saxophone. This afternoon, they present a dynamic program featuring works by Kurt Weill, André Caplet (with Mellema as a soloist), Leonard Bernstein, and Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, combined with the vibrant rhythms of Colombian folk music.

After the concert

A lunchtime concert wouldn’t be complete without a delicious meal. That’s why, after the performance, you can enjoy a flavorful homemade soup and freshly baked bread in the Stadsfoyer. You can order this directly with your ticket! Staying a little longer? Great!

Program

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck – Psalm 111
Kurt Weill – The Three Penny Opera Suite (arr. Christoph Enzel)
André Caplet – Impressions d’Automne
Leonard Bernstein – West Side Story
Luis E. Bermudez, José Barros – Co-Cumbias
